About

Mary was born in Ireland into an artistic family, her Grandfather and Uncle were sculptors. She started off as a painter in her twenties, studying with Kenneth Webb the Irish Landscape Artist.
It was only after marriage and 3 daughters that her attention inevitably turned to Sculpture.
It took less than a year to convince her that working with clay gave her that "I have come home feeling" .
After studying the works of Rodin she spent the next 20 years perfecting her portrait skills.

Exhibition History

Mary has been exhibiting her sculptures since 1989 in London, Ireland and New York in group and one man shows.

Specializing in Portraiture she was commissioned to sculpt over 60 Portrait Busts in Bronze and the odd life size statue.

One of the most exciting moments of her sculpting career was at the unveiling of her Bronze Life Size Statue of the Founder of Methodism, John Wesley. There was an invited audience of 400 Dignitaries flown in to Norfolk Virginia from 5 states of the USA (the event took over a year to plan) and Dr Donald English flown in from England to be the Keynote Speaker.

There were also 4 Bishops, a Judge and a Methodist Choir surrounding the statue. After the unveiling Mary became a minor Celebrity as 400 people lined up for her to autograph the program.
She spent an amazing week in Virginia as guest of Robert and Sara Boyd who commissioned the Statue, being chauffeured to Dinners, Galas, Shows and Museums and taken out on their Whaling Yacht and generally being treated like Royalty.

Artist Statement

Mary studied oil painting in her twenties with Irish Landscape Artist Kenneth Web while still living in Co Down Northern Ireland. She switched to sculpture in her thirties
her Grandfather and Uncle were sculptors.
She fell in love with the clay, loved the medium and the challenge of working 3 dimensionally and getting not only a likeness to her sitter but capturing their inner essence

It was while she was preparing sculpture for The Christian Resources Exhibition at Sandown Esher UK that Mary while working on a head of Christ was moved to say "I have come Home".

"After four tortured years, more than 400 over life-sized figures, I felt as old and as weary as Jeremiah. I was only 37, yet friends did not recognize the old man I had become."
